TACA Georgia Marks May 19th with Spirited Stone Mountain Hike and Commemoration

ATLANTA, GA – May 19, 2025 – Today, TACA Georgia joins the Turkish-American community and people around the world in celebrating the May 19th Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. This important national holiday in Turkiye remembers a key moment in history and celebrates the energy of the nation's youth.

In honor of this day, TACA Georgia organized its annual commemorative hike at Stone Mountain Park yesterday, Sunday, May 18th. A lively group of Turkish-Americans, with many young people proudly participating, gathered for the event. Carrying Turkish flags and wearing Atatürk t-shirts, the community shared a memorable day.

Participants began with the singing of the Turkish National Anthem (İstiklal Marşı). This was followed by a heartfelt recitation of Atatürk’s Address to Turkish Youth (Gençliğe Hitabe), a historic speech emphasizing responsibility and national values. The gathering also enjoyed performing the traditional Atabarı folk dance, adding a joyful and cultural touch to the commemoration.

Why is May 19th Celebrated?

May 19th is a very significant date in Turkish history. It marks the day in 1919 when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkiye, arrived in the Black Sea city of Samsun. This event is widely seen as the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence, a fight that led to the establishment of the Republic of Turkiye.

Atatürk later dedicated this special day to the young people of Turkiye. He believed that the youth were the future of the nation and that their energy and spirit were vital for the country's progress and security. That's why the day is also known as "Youth and Sports Day," highlighting the importance of young people being active, healthy, and engaged in their country's future.

A Day of Unity and Looking Forward

The event at Stone Mountain reflected the spirit of May 19th – a time to remember important history, celebrate Turkish culture, and look forward with hope, especially through the involvement of youth.

"Seeing our community, particularly our young members, come together with such enthusiasm to honor this day was truly wonderful," said a TACA Georgia representative. "Events like these help us share our heritage and instill a sense of pride and connection."

TACA Georgia extends its warmest congratulations to everyone on this Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. May the values of unity, determination, and youthful energy continue to inspire us all.
